Project Description

Tom Rickard

Where Do You Call Home: I was born and raised on the North Coast of America, aka the greater Cleveland, Ohio area; for the last 30-odd years home has been Franklin County, Virginia.

What do you do for a living?
I’m an educator – an elementary librarian, to be specific. I’m in my 23rd year and truly love it. I also officiate volleyball, basketball and lacrosse. And teach Sunday school to 2nd graders

How did you first connect with The Herren Project?
I was introduced to Chris Herren’s story through the ESPN documentary, Unguarded. From there, through a series of remarkable circumstances involving a Boston Marathon jacket, a Runners World article, and esteemed author Caleb Daniloff, my wife met Chris. A short time later she was asked to join the Herren Project team to help develop a running initiative. And the rest, as the kids say, is history!

Who’s one of your running or athletic “heroes” and why?
Besides my wife, I would have to say Meb Keflezighi. He is not only one of the greatest distance runners of his generation, but is a man of tremendous grace and humility. I’ve always loved how he has prioritized his family, been open about his strong faith, and has celebrated being an American citizen. His win at Boston in 2014 was the perfect cap to his career. We met him briefly in New York and he was as kind and gracious as I could have hoped he’d be.

What’s your favorite running/race distance?
My favorite experiences have been half marathons, especially on trails, even when (I guess especially when) they’re tough. There’s something really satisfying about slogging through a gnarly, muddy course and finishing completely spent. I like to earn my shambling limp.

What are you most proud of?
My family. We have been through so much more than we could have ever anticipated, and we continue to battle some intense challenges. But by the grace of God we are together, we have grown and continue to grow together, and we’ve never been closer. My wife’s transformation has continued to be miraculous, our kids have shown a remarkable ability to forgive and love and are fiercely loyal to one another. I am grateful beyond words for who we are together.
